A lot of clubs use older computers due to the physical ports they have that are no longer found on modern laptops. That means there are a lot of us still running Windows XP. Microsoft is ending support for that OS this spring. Anyone considered what implications that might have for these older machines? Our ski club has four Dells from the 03-04 vintage and they are used for nothing but ski racing. I think they should be fine as they have so little use and minimal internet contact. Comments? Concerns?

Like everything else, there are the diminishing returns you are going to get as time goes on. You don't mention the capacity of the machines but it is possible that you could reformat the drive and install windows 7, 32 bit and continue for quite a while longer. I have about 16 dell d620/630 notebooks and 2/3 of them are win 7 now. I bought them that way. I wanted to keep xp but have learned to deal with w7.

Drivers for printers and other devices, USB devices etc. will become harder to find for xp as makers just move on.

The good thing is that W8 seems to be on the way out too and Microsoft will no doubt be bringing out something akin to W7 phase 2 that will actually be friendly enough to work for our needs.
The machines I purchased for our club all have 1.6 - 2.0 GB RAM. I tried installing Win 7 on one of them a couple of months ago and it appeared to run fine for the few days it was on there, Split Second and the scant few other apps we use all looked good on this admittedly limited trial. The only reason I didn't leave it there is the cost of licensing four computers over to Win 7. They run fine at present in XP and the club can use its funds for other purposes.
