This is a common problem that can happen when files are moved from one computer to another using a CD. When the file is written to the CD the file attribute 'read only' is often set. Then, on the other computer the software can't save the file (which it does automatically every minute or two).
I've added it to my to-do list to automatically remove the read-only status before trying to save.
Geoff, Maybe you can fix another problem I'm having with Ski Club or offer suggestions. Every time I open the program and try to use it I get and Invalid File Name pop up box and the program freezes. I've tried multiple ways to create file names and nothing helps. The only way for me to exit is to go to Windows Task Manager and click on End Program. I've tried removing the program completely through Control Panel and then re-installing the newest version to no avail. Funny thing is it seems to work fine on my other computer. Any ideas would be appreciated.
You get the Error because the software is looking for the name of a race that no longer exists. The software automatically opens the last file that was opened each time it is opened. This file name is saved in the files Chase named. Deleting the file solves the problem and the deleted default file is automatically recreated.

I just posted a new Revision of the National / FIS Software with the goal of addressing these issues. I'll work on the Club software too.

  • 12/20/07 ver 6.02, rev 5 : Added logic to deal with read-only files and not attempt to save files to non-writable media (such as a CD). Files often are set to read only when moved between computers via CD.
  • Added logic to check if the file to be opened (either race file or import file) is currently locked by another application such as Excel or Word so it can be dealt with gracefully. Now it gives a warning explaining the file is locked.
Strangely, I just installed the latest club software (4.03 Rev 1) on a Vista machine and am getting File Access Denied on startup of the software. I've looked for read only files and have tried the other suggestions on this thread to no avail. The software is currently pointed at an existing, read-write results file. The message only occurs once (on startup) and never again, until the next startup.
Vista, yes, love it at times, hate it at times.

The easiest way to 'fix' this problem, is to right click the program icon(shortcut), select properties, and make sure that "Run as administrator" is checked.

You'll need to do this every time you download a new version as the properties are re-set.
Thanks, I had solved it another way and was about to post my solution, but your solution of Running as Administrator works too. My solution was to turn off User Account Control, which was pretty annoying anyway.

Neither of these solutions seem to work for me unless I'm also logged in as an admin user, which I typically am. But out of curiosity I ran a test as a normal user and continued getting the error when Running as Admin and with User Account Control off.

I also tried setting the permissions on the C drive the same for normal users as Admin, and that didn't seem to help either. So it's probably bombing out accessing some other secure service or registry setting. I'm sure Geoff will track it down one of these days.
Guys: I am having a problem with NASTAR and ski Club software. In both cases everytime I open them I get the file access denied and invaled file name. I can't delete ski club defaults because the program doesn't exist in my program folder but the shortcut is on my desktop. My notebook is on the company network but our race computer is not and I have no issues with any of the programs. The only program that works on my notebook is the USSA/FIS software from split second. Need Help.
Jenna: Thanks for the reply. I uninstalled ski club and tried to reinstall it and got this error:

c:\kl2log.htm was not found

Runtime error:
Program: c:\program files\splitsecond\skiclub\keylockinstall.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
