It is with sadness that I report the passing of Dick Beare of Calgary, Alberta on February 27, 2017, aged 74 years.
Like so many of us, Dick was introduced to timing when his daughter was involved in youth ski racing. As a software engineer, he felt challenged to develop software for timing and scoring. The result was the dTris/Measures system still widely used in Canada today. Dick's involvement with racing lasted decades after his daughter ceased racing, and over the years he put literally tens of thousands of hours into on-site timing, software development and website development/management for Alpine Canada Alpin. He continued his close association with ski racing until illness intervened in the last year.
My sympathy and condolences go out to Dick's family and the close-knit timing community. Racing has lost one of its key figures, and Dick's intelligence, experience, humour and kindness will be much missed. He was a mentor to me and to many others, a true representation of the values of volunteerism and service that are a core part of our sport.
Thanks Dick for a life well lived.
