Really cool new timing & scoring tower at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Nicest one I've ever seen.

This week is the Rolex Kentucky 3-Day, the only FEI 4-Star Eventing competition in the Americas. There are only four 4-Star 3-Days in the world: Rolex, Badminton & Burleigh (England), and Adelaide.

The only problem with this tower is every once in a while, some smartass gets on the walkie and says something like "Lufthansa 268, you are cleared for final approach on runway two niner left".

For the dressage portion, Rolex is using Skunkware Dressage32, collecting the movement-by-movement scores in real time to be sent to their web site and to IDS's matrix scoreboards.

For the X-C portion, Rolex is using Skunkware TT*Ware to produce on-air graphics for the live EuroSport and same-day tape delay OLN broadcasts.

For the showjumping portion, Rolex is using Skunkware Showjump32 to task the IDS scoreboards, to produce on-air grfx for OLN and Eurosport, and to update the RK3DE.ORG web site.

Absolutely unbelievable finish to the RK3DE today. I'm usually blase about the events to which I provide services, but this was really something. One of the best finishes I've ever seen in professional sport.

After hours of competition over three days, Pippa Funnell led Polly Stockton by 6 faults; all Pippa had to do was complete the showjumping phase with <= one rail to win. Pippa jumped clean, and the crowd went wild. But those who looked at the scoreboard [and those who were watching my timing grfx on EuroSport live) saw she'd exceeded the Time Allowed by 6 seconds, and the two were TIED. All hell broke loose. Never happened before in CCI 4-Star [Olympic Level) competition.

After FEI rule books were dusted off, the tie was broken by the FEI TD in Funnell's favor, as her Cross-Country score from the day before was slightly closer to the Optimum Time than Stockton's.

RK3DE Director Jane Atkinson, along with myself, have railed and ranted at the FEI's rulemaking stupidity in truncating dressage phase scores in 3-Day to the 1/10, especially in light of the fact that all FEI dressage competitions score to >= 1/1000. Some even score to the 1/10000. This year's RK3DE provides excellent ammo for Jane to go back to the FEI once again to tell them their rule is DUMB.

Special thanks to Carr-Hughes Productions, who were going live to EuroSport and same-day tape-delay to OLN with all this. Can't wait to see a tape of the show.
