A lot of jaws have been dropping at the sight of Kitzbühel's imaginative, modernistic take on FIS's tired old start facade design. A fiberglass tunnel extends over 4 meters outside the building, with foam-core "tombstones" displaying sponsorship and custom steel start posts (with internal cable routing) bolted right through the floor. As we've done for previous years, a custom ALGE start gate is bolted directly to the posts through machined / tapped bolt holes in the steel posts (no chain required).

FIS has steadily eroded away the fans' view of the athlete preparing to start for years, and now the KSC and Audi have reversed that trend with dramatic flair.

Only 4 people will be allowed into the tunnel - our starter, the start referee, the racer, and one coach.

Wow, great pikkie of Walchhofer.

The wafer-shaped device on top of the start post is a custom startflash. Yet another clever invention by JimmyBob Karnes, designer of The Blinky Box.

I've added a few close-ups to the photo gallery. The kewl photo of the flashes going off, with the Kitzbühel Valley in the background, is courtesy of Michael Walker Photography.

Needless to say, Rolex likes it. A lot.

Unfortunately, on the first day we only had white wire handy at the start. It has since been changed to black, and the master metalworker from KSC who built those killer custom steel Rolex startposts is already working on an updated model with internal cable routing for the startflash wires.
