I've used an old tripod with an extension made with a pole on top the tripod is a 5 footer with a 3 ft pole as the extension. The pole has a 1/4 x 20 thread in the bottom and a place to hang the sensor at the top.
If you or anyone else is still looking for a stand, I've been happy with my Cowboy Studio 7ft light stand. It was $28 for a 2 pack and includes a (very thin) bag.
The stand is light enough for the official to carry around, and 7' is almost always tall enough. I made an extension out of a dowel for those who use an extra tall step stool.
Why lug around a stand?? Make a loop with some duct tape, tape it around the bottom of the sensor and the starter hangs it from his pinky. That way it is as close to the gun as possible and no missed starts and one last thing to carry around. If you don't have a wireless sensor, YOU NEED TO GET ONE!!!!
A stand is actually a really good idea for bigger meets where there are more than one starter. I know some timers that only use them, to the point that they build a stand incorporating them.
