Brother printers don't like external USB hubs in general. A powered hub should be ok but an inexpensive one won't be. The printer should be plugged directly into the PC. Otherwise you risk dropping the voltage to the point where your TIMY, USB software dongle, etc won't work.

This seems to be a Brother printer issue but that is probably because so many of them are use at events.

I will defer to John on this. The dongle and the display output are pretty critical to the overall picture.

This may also be an operating system issue.

I use XP for all of my timing applications. The problem that I observed most recently was on a machine running Vista with a fresh install of a new Brother 2270.

I have not experienced any issues plugging this exact printer into the XP machine I have here so far. I will try an non powered Targus hub today.
