We recently purcahsed a new dual start gate from you for the Greek Peak ski team. When we hooked everything up for our Sunday race, the volume to the head sets went down substantially and the impulse from the start gate was not registering at the primary timer (a Tag Heuer CP 705). For various reasons, we never connected the secondary system. Does the secondary timer need to be connected for the primary to work correctly? Have you ever heard of this type of problem before. Do you have any suggestions?

I tried to replicate your problems here without success. Please try the following:

Assuming that the pairs of wire to the start are good with reasonable resistance. The note about the drop in volume makes me suspect high resistance. The S3 will operate at up to 600 ohms of line resistance. Far greater than the TAG 705 can tolerate.

1) Plug the ALGE headset into the ALGE start gate

2) Connect the Red and black pair of banana plugs (backup) to the backup pair of wires and into the ALGE S3 timer start inputs (backup) You should be able to talk just fine on this pair of cables. If not then check the start gate and the S3 right together at the finish. If you still cannot talk, there may be a problem with the S3. Try another ALGE timer or Sv4 (sv3) amplifier.

3) Plug the TAG 705 into the Green and Black pair of banana plugs (primary) You should now get solid pulses on both the S3 and the TAG 705. If the TAG fails, reverse the polarity of the pair connected to it.

You could also run the TAG 705 by itself and use the ALGE headsets

1) You must use an ALGE timer or Sv4 (sv3) amplifier with the TAG 705 in parallel. In other words the signal going into the timer must be split ("y". One leg (pair) into the timer, one leg (paralleled pair) into the amp. If the timer fails, reverse polarity.

2) Everything must be on prior to testing

We run into this often using the dual output start gates. We found on one set of outputs (not sure what color, which is why we keep finding this) the headset volume is considerably lower than if you use the other pair of outputs to connect to your timer or SV4 amp at the bottom. So if you hook up to get the start and
communications on the Green/Black output and level is too low, switch to the Red/Black output and you will get a much louder level. (That may be backwards but is the same procedure anyways)
