We are looking to replace a GPS for a MyLaps ProChip Decoder and avoid what appears to be excessive pricing that MyLaps are asking for this item. That's on my assumption that the Garmin GPS18x LVC is a suitable unit rather than the more expensive GPS18X-5HZ model.

Is anyone able to share their experience with purchase, performance and fitting of a GPS independent of MyLaps?

I am shocked, just shocked that you think MyLaps charges too much for their stuff!

We have used the GPS 18x LVC for years with our ProChip decoders and have had no issues. There is some programming that has to be done. You can download the software from the Garmin web site.(http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=4055) There is an option that will allow you to suck the configuration from another GPS and send it to the new one. That's what we've done.
Thanks milliseconds for the information as well as your wit (or is that cynicism). Smile

Will give that process a try as we are looking at sourcing additional decoders in the near future. Just need to resurrect my old serial port equipped PC that’s buried under other “may come in useful one day junk” in the garage as haven’t heard much good news on USB to Serial adaptors.

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but whats the pinout on the MyLaps RC4 decoder to use the 18 LVC? I've found two conflicting schematics from MyLaps for kart and moto-x transponders. One gives me nothing, the other shows 5 satellites but won't sync the time.
