Hello,
We have an Alge ASC-1 start clock whose internal semaphore will run for a few minutes then cease operation. This occurs even with the clock on AC power. If I remember correctly, the semaphore is automatically shut down by the clock when battery power drops below a certain point. Can a bad battery affect the clock in such a way that it shuts down the semaphore even while running on AC? Thank You, Dale Magnant Originally posted 12 Jan 2001 by Dale Magnant |

The power condition is crucial to the operation of all timing equipment. The ASC 1 start clock has a lead acid "gel cell" battery commonly used in alarm systems. It is used to being charged on a more or less constant basis. Plugging the ASC1 in every month overnight would be a good idea. You can check the battery condition by removing the 4 screws that hold the face plate on and carefully sliding the clock face out. The battery is down at the bottom and you can probe it. It should be at least 12.5vdc resting , 12v with the device turned on and 13.5vdc with the AC power connected.
The SEMAPHORE dot is a standard dot with additional two sided decal. We can rebuild the circuit board that holds the dot if needed, or send you a replacement that you can install your self. Originally posted 14 Jan 2001 by Fred Patton |

Hello,
I checked the resting voltage on the battery - it indicated 12.25 VDC. Upon acquiring the recommended tool (WIHA 5.5mm nut driver) I was able to install the replacement battery you had previously sent me. Resting voltage of the new battery, without having charged it for any period, was about 12.55 VDC. So far in a fairly brief period of testing, the semaphore has continued to function without fail. Thanks for the timely help - in the future I will try to charge the battery at some regular interval, or simply store it on AC power. Dale Magnant |
