We would like to have intermediate times displayed on Live-Timing on an upcoming GS race. To get an intermediate time we are thinking that we could setup an RLS1n mid-course wired to a TED-TX with the pair of wires interrupted by a switch. The person assigned to that position would actuate the switch to hopefully arm the photocell as the racer approaches. The TED-RX connected to the S-4 (using SST FIS, mapped correctly) we hope to see intermediate times. I have a few questions. Will this simple switch send an impulse to the S-4 upon actuation (thereby screwing things up)? And will the S4 log in TOD’s?
If this scenario does not work, please indicate the best ways to do this. Thanks

That setup will work fine. You could eliminate the switch using the minimum time function in Split Second. If you know the approximate time appropriate for the level of competition, start there and adjust using data from the forerunners. Any stray impulses (course workers) would be ignored by the software, but not the S4.

I tested two interim time set-ups this weekend and both worked fine.

One is a simple doorbell switch, wired into the TED-TX. As the racer passes a chosen spot, a volunteer punches the button and sends the impulse. Not really precise, but it's only an interim time and keeps it very simple.

The second is a light switch wired into the middle of the ground wire leading from the photocell to the TED-TX. As the racer approaches, the volunteer flips the switch to "on", allowing the impulse to pass when the racer breaks the beam. They then switch it off to allows course workers etc. to pass without sending a ping to the timers.

It was surprisingly easy, and I have all of about $7 invested in the rigs.
