The cable for S4 design 1 and 2 is the same.

The 5 pin DIN plug (VM 615/D) uses the center pin as ground and the pin 3 ( 7 pm if looking down on the solder side) as signal.

The DB9 Male plug uses pin 5 as ground and Pin 3 as signal.

The pins for S4 design 3 is different as the change was made to an 8 pin design the same as used for RS232 data. Pin 2 ( 6 pm ) is ground and Pin 1 (1 pm) is signal. You only need the 5 pin plug (VM-615/45) if you are using a printer with it's own power like the Seiko.

The ALGE P5 printer if connected to a S4 design 3 uses the 8 pin plug (VM MAS80-S)and has Pin 2 ground, Pin 1 signal, Pin 7 power.

We draw our cables looking down on the pins as we are going to solder them. ALGE cable book does the reverse.

The programming for Seiko printers is listed here on the forums as well.
