Is there one dip switch setting that allows me to connect the DPU-411 directly to the S4 or to an Alge Opto-Data unit? Currently, I have to change dip switch settings, depending on how I'm connecting the printer.

Yes, kinda....

If you set up the printer to work with the S4, you can go into the Registry of the Alge Opti software and configure the printer to have the same settings as an S4. The detailed instructions for the regedit commands are in the back of the users manual for the Opti. Once inside the Regedit for the Opti software you can find the settings for the printer and change to match the setting to match the S4.

Simpler way, I have two Seiko 414's with one set for each device and mark them with a sticker.

Another issue to be aware of is that the default baud rate for the two serial outputs of the S4 are different. The Printer port default output is 2400 baud. The RS232 port output is 4800 baud.

There are several legacy Split Second adapters for printers and data floating around. SST used a split cable to allow a COMET (which uses the same RS232 port) to output to a Seiko and PC at the same time. You then set your Seiko to 2400 baud if using the COMET or 4800 baud if using the S4.

Most users of the S4 have 2 separate cables. One blue colored for RS232 data to the PC. The Printer cable is either yellow or black.
