We are looking to buy a TaG 540. Following that we are looking at displays to use with that timer and or Split Second timing software. At this time we are leaning towards the HL980 and HL980-1. I like the fact that the display can display the Bib# followed by run time and total time without needing two displays.

Are there any hidden traps I need to know about this combo? Could it be used with a laptop to display info such as Bib and score for a Snowboard competition? What special needs or cables are required for full functionallity?

You will like the 540. Check with Race America for LED TAG configuration in 5" up to 14" boards. Our Race America board is configured to work like a TAG 990(801)@9600 baud off SST with a null modum added to the serial cable. Pull the null modum to run it directly off the 540 rs232 serial cable(change output to display). You will need a USB to serial cable and the software added to the couputer you are running SST on. Think you can send SST data on Ethernet while also sending info directly to display with 540.
