The COMET timer has a small LCD display. The older COMETs have begun to show signs of having weak displays. Open the COMET by removing the rubber pads and the phillips head screws. There is an adjustable Pot (little black knob) directly to the right of where the LCD connection to the main circuit board is. Turn that Pot clockwise to increase LCD contrast. You may also want to clean the contacts of the white ribbon cable that connects the screen to the circuit board.
