Hoping someone has a more efficient solution to capture time data on the following ON-ICE test:

1. 8-12 ice hockey players line-up on goal line
and all start skating at same time (synched via visual cue)

2. they skate to other end of the rink (then stop)and return towards the start line and cross a line that is 35 feet from the original start line (total distance = 300 feet) and repeat every 30 seconds, six times

3. data needed:
A/ SPRINT TIME: time to get from start to red line (85 feet) Times range from 3.80 to 5.55s
B/ LAP TIME: time to get from start to finish. Times for this range from 12-17 seconds (accuracy needed 0.01s)

4. the data would be automatically stored and managed
5. we are a commercial mobile system so cannot rely on imbedded technologies!

Currently I use two camera angles (one for capturing the SPRINT line and another to capture the LAP time) and analyze with Dartfish or Kinovea

I want to reduce the data analysis time which is about 20-30 minutes per heat.

You can easily do this with transponders but would need to cut slots in the ice for the detection wires. You could use "disposable wire and leave it if the rinks were ok with that. Active transponders would probably be the transponder solution accurate enough. Y

Alternatively line scan cameras would speed up results and evaluation but either way you'll have a significant hardware investment.


Incidentally we have some hardware for sale for a transponder solution.
