Earlier this year I timed a SG event with 2 intervals and tried to do a speed trap between the two. All I got for speed on the interval report was questions marks. ??????? I got busy and gave up after a while of trying different options. Yesterday I did another SG with the same two intervals and thought I'd try again. Same thing. All question marks. I'm using v. 5.18. I've gone through all the settings, set it for 2 intervals and 1 speed trap. Put in all the measurements. Applied the inputs to the proper locations in both interval and speed trap tabs. I even tried doing different things with the speed trap inputs and still nothing. I even tried using the start for the beginning of the trap and the finish for the end of the trap with the course measurement for length and still just ???????. Anyone else had any luck with the speed trap option that can offer some advice?

Just for fun I tried for speed traps today. We had a GS with 2 intervals. I set the traps for each section. Live timing had the speeds and reports printed but I did not nail the distances with the set and the last trap had the kids running 95mph. We will try again tomorrow with more acurate measurements.

I've discovered my errors. The two SG races that I tried speed traps I entered the speed trap data after the race was complete as I did not have the correct distance measurements prior to the start. We measured the distance between Interval 1 and 2 at the end of the race, then went into the speed trap configuration and set up the input mapping and set the distance. Apparently this after the fact set up doesn't work. I guess I just figured that the software would do a time and distance calculation and do the math to come up with the speed. Since we are done with races I had a chance to experiment further. If you set it all up prior to the start of the race, it works fine. Enter all the input mapping data and distance measurement. Run your racers and all the interval times and speed show up in the timing screen. Select the proper report and there it is. So the moral of the story is that you have to do all the set up prior to runnning the race. You can't enter details after the racers have completed their run.

Hi Dirk. We talked a little about this on the chairlift during JO's, but what you want to do, ideally, is to utilize your speed trap at either Int 1 or Int 2 (with a third pair of photocells, not by measuring the distance between the two Ints(which would be hard to do, given the fact that every racers line will be different). Choose whichever location is 'better' (straight, fast, safe, enough pairs available to use, etc.) Then set another set of cells 100 ft. or so below the Int. cell. Measure the distance with a tape from within the race line, and enter this number for your speed distance "@ Int. #?." You will get more accurate speeds this way, and they will be easier to maintain, as your Int. window will also be working with your trap (and you will not miss times due to slippers and/or other movement on the hill).
