has anyone tried using a mini laptop with splitsecond and S4? We are looking at an inexpensive backup to the backup laptop and I was wondering if anyone has played with these types of laptops and the software/timing

Thanks

You are speaking about a "netbook"? I would try using the netbook/split second combination with a TIMY via USB first. That should be more stable. You will have to use a USB to serial adapter of some flavor to get the S4 to connect and that could be a big problem area.

on both laptops we use today, I'm using usb->serial adapters with little issue. As I mentioned to Geoff, I'll give the mini/net book a shot and see if I find any issues

We will get a netbook and try it out too. These machines do show some promise for a very reasonable investment.

Any word on how these hold up? I've heard that they only have solid state hard drives, instead of traditional mechanical drives, and this seems like it would be better for mobility.
