The S3 is an old timer that uses 2400,N,7,1 protocol instead of the more common 2400,N,8,1 that the other timers use. Make sure that the protocol is correct and try again. Always use Procom or Telix or even Hyper terminal to check the output. Programs have a bad habit of not displaying the true result.

The S3 timer is capable of sending data from either the Printer or Scoreboard port. ALways use the Printer port first because data is sent out of both possible connections. The Scoreboard port only sends "time of day" in one connection. Experiment after you have made the connection using the Printer port. Label the DIN plug "UP" or similar.

what is the pin out from the s3 jack to the d25 or d9 to make the s3 talk to split second or nastar?

Pin 1 is GND
Pin 5 is Serial Running times

DB9
Pin 2 Data In
Pin 3 Data Out
Pin 5 Gnd
So you would wire Pin 1 on the 5 pin DIN to pin 5 on the DB9 and Pin 5 on the 5 Pin DIN to pin 2 on the DB9.

Make sure the S3 is in a mode to have TODs sent out. I am sure there is a post about it somewhere.
